What differentiates the living from the dead is Life. The flow of life through the body ensures our existence in this terrestrial world. If what we see in the physical is all there is, then we can conclude that life ends at death. For the physical body, life is in the body fluids eg. for animals, life is in the blood and for trees, it is in the sap.

  "... For the life of all flesh is its blood..." Leviticus 17:14

However, there is more to life than the physical body. For human beings, we are not like animals, we are superior in substance. There is a spirit in man. Man is different because our body is a dwelling place for our spirit and soul. When the Bible talks about 'Life' it is referring not to the life force of the physical body but the spiritual life force within each human being that distinguishes us from all other creatures. This spiritual life force is from God himself. At the creation of the first man, after the body was formed, God breathed the breath of life into the man and he became a living soul.

  "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7
